GPSC exam is conducted by GPSC BOARD. Exam calendar is declared by GPSC board every year in February month. Board is trying to conduct all the exam according to this calendar.

If we are talking GPSC's Gujarat Administrative Service, Class-1, Gujarat Civil Services, Class-1 & Class-2 & Gujarat Municipal Chief Officer Service,

Class-2 exam pattern, which is very similar to UPSC IAS-IPS exam.

About exam pattern of GPSC class 1 & 2, exam is conducted in three phases, which may take a year for the final selection of officers.

1st step of exam:

First step of exam is prelim exam, which has two papers in a day. Both the exams are MCQ typed.Both have 200 MCQs.Each question has weights of one marks,so total marks of prelim exam is 400.

(In prelim exam,there is minus 0.3 for every wrong attempt.)

(The medium of the examination shall be English and Gujarati. )

To crack these prelim exam, candidates must have more marks than cutoff. Every year cut off is less than 160.

3. Polity                             3.Science
4. Maths & reasoning     4.Current affairs.

(Prelim marks is not considered in the final selection. It is just one kind of barrier for candidates.)

2nd step of exam:

If candidate has more than cut off marks in prelim exam, candidate is allowed for mains exam.

Mains exam is written exam, in which candidate must write answers of the questions in descriptive.

(Candidate can write an answer of question in gujarati or english language.)

Mains exam has 6 papers and total weightage of 900 marks.

1st PAPER GUJARATI                       (150 marks)

2nd PAPER ENGLISH                       (150 marks)

3rd ESSAY      (150 MARKS

4th PAPER GENERAL STUDIES-1 (150 marks)

Which has 15 questions, each has weightage of 10 marks.

1. History
2. Culture heritage
3. Geography

5th PAPER GENERAL STUDIES-2  (150 marks)

Which has 15 questions,each has weightage of 10 marks.

1. Indian Polity and Constitution
2. Public Administration and Governance
3. Ethics in Public Service

6th PAPER GENERAL STUDIES-3  (150 marks)

Which has 15 questions,each has weightage of 10 marks.

1. Science And Technology
2. Indian economy and planning
3. Current Events of Regional, National and International Importance 

When candidates have enough marks in mains exam, GPSC declare there roll numbers and call all these candidates in interview who have good marks in mains exam.

(At this moment GPSC is not declaring the result of the mains exam.)

3rd step of exam:

Interview                                            (100 marks)

Final merit:

Mains exam + interview= final merit 

       (900)               (100)          (1000)

The safe zone for selection is more than 460.
